DAP candidate: Ting promised college if Barisan wins

The Star : Wednesday June 11, 2008

SIBU: DAP candidate Dr Wong Hua Seh who lost in the election for the Sarikei parliamentary seat in March told the Election Court here that local corporate leader Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing committed corrupt practices during the campaign period.

He said Ting had promised to build a Tunku Abdul Rahman College campus in Bintangor if the people voted for Barisan Nasional.

The Barisan candidate, Ding Kuong Hiing from the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), won the seat by a majority of 51 votes. Dr Wong is petitioning the court to declare the results void.

Dr Wong had earlier named Returning Officer Abang Mohd Porkan Budiaman as the first respondent and Ding the second respondent but he later dropped Abang Mohd Porkan from the petition.

During the petition hearing, Dr Wong said Ting made the promise at a number of public functions and this was widely reported, especially in the local Chinese newspapers.

He said Ting had promised the people that if Ding won, he would build the college, estimated to cost RM200mil, on his land in Kelupu near Bintangor town.

Dr Wong said he had lodged reports against Ting’s corrupt practice at the Bintangor and Sarikei police stations. – Bernama
